Fire Dampers (EN 13501-3:2025)

With the new EU Delegated Regulation (EU 2024/1681), fire dampers are now required to be tested from both sides. As a result, the term “fire direction” should no longer appear in classifications; however, the fact that the product has been tested from both sides must be clearly indicated in both the classification reports and the certificate. In line with this change, existing certificates must also be updated.

a) Double Fire Direction:
Previous classifications, (i→o) and (o→i), are no longer valid.

b) Blade Axis:
The new classification standard requires that the orientation of the damper blade axis (horizontal/vertical) be specified in the classifications. Accordingly, certificates issued under EN 15650:2010 must be updated to include this information.

Additionally, the current documentation of EN 15650:2010 still references the older EN 13501-3:2005 standard, which may give the impression that the old sub-classifications (i→o) are still valid. However, the official position from the European Commission clarifies that regulations take precedence over standards, meaning that the i→o classification is no longer valid. Market surveillance authorities and notified bodies are expected to act in accordance with this.
